A trip to De Smet, takes visitors to the homestead of famed author, Laura Ingalls Wilder. The area was featured in several of her Little House series books, including "By the Shores of Silver Lake," "The Long Winter," "Little Town on the Prairie," "These Happy Golden Years" and "The First Four Years.".
Visitors can spend an entire day visiting the many attractions devoted to Laura's time in South Dakota. These include the original Ingalls homestead, the house that Pa Ingalls built, the original Surveyors' House from Laura's book "By the Shores of Silver Lake," Big Slough and Silver Lake. Visitors can camp, take covered wagon rides, attend an 1880's school session or try other pioneering activities.
The Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant, held each July, tells a story of a different aspect of Laura's life each year. The pageant is held outdoors, one mile southeast of De Smet.
The homestead is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day each summer.
