The South Dakota State Park system features 54 state parks and recreation areas that showcase South Dakota's natural beauty and boundless recreational opportunities. The Department of Game, Fish & Parks manages these parks as well as six nature areas, an historic prairie, 69 lakeside use areas, and the 114-mile Mickelson Trail.
South Dakota's broad expanses of prairies, back-country mountains, plentiful lakes and lush woods allow for plenty of room to play. There are clear lakes for fishing, sailing and swimming; woodland trails for hiking, biking and riding; rivers for kayaking and canoeing; and frontier forts for exploring. Spend a day or a week
